Vaccine Cold-Chain Control Room

Aim — To monitor a live vaccine refrigerator, recognise a temperature excursion as it develops, respond in the correct order, inspect the affected stock, and reach a defensible disposition — protecting both the patients and the vaccine.

Your watch

You are the pharmacist on duty in the vaccine store at Alizon Teaching Hospital. The refrigerator holds a live immunisation session’s stock and is logged continuously. Something is going to go wrong on your watch. What matters is whether you notice it, and what you do in the first few minutes.

  1. The temperature trace is live. Watch it — the excursion does not announce itself politely at first.
  2. Every stage is timed and the order of your actions is marked. Quarantine comes before assessment, always.
  3. Some of the stock is recoverable and some is not. Discarding usable vaccine is scored as a real loss, not a safe default.
  4. A Vaccine Potency Index tracks the doses that remain genuinely usable; a Compliance Index tracks whether your response would survive an audit.

At the end the session runs and you see how many children were actually protected.
