New to dispensing? Start here

You are the pharmacist. A prescription arrives and you must give out the right medicine, safely, from a digital stock rack. The golden rules:

  1. Right drug, right strength — match exactly what the prescription says (watch for look-alike strengths).
  2. FEFO — First Expiry First Out — dispense the batch with the earliest expiry first (reduces waste).
  3. FIFO — First In First Out — if two batches have the same expiry, give the one received earliest.
  4. Never dispense an expired or wrong-strength product. Then dispense the correct quantity, label it, update stock and counsel the patient.
